How the Story Was Discovered

Patrick Dewane’s journey began not with a script—but with silence. His grandfather, Lt. Col. Matt Konop, rarely spoke about WWII. Not at home. Nor was it told at his funeral. It wasn’t until decades later, when Patrick’s sister unearthed a dusty manuscript in a basement, that the truth emerged.
Konop’s wartime writings revealed a stunning story: of all the soldiers in the U.S. Army, he led the unit that liberated the very region his Czech ancestors had left generations earlier. His first language was Czech—and when he arrived in his grandmother’s village, the locals were astonished: not only did he speak their dialect, he looked like them. They lifted him onto their shoulders, calling him “one of our own.” In the process, the Czechs liberated Konop from his own misconceptions about his roots. Indeed, his new-found Czech identity became the greatest passion for the rest of his life.
Liberation is at the heart of The Accidental Hero, a book that reveals a legacy almost lost to history.
